A developer approached our studio to design houses on-spec for a striking wooded site on the coast of Nova Scotia. We developed two proposals: one that engages the cliffside overlooking the Atlantic, and one sited inland surrounded by forest.
The houses, composed of cast-in-place concrete and folding planes of vertical cedar, reimagine the cabin in the woods at a grander scale. Wood screens, punched openings, and voids cut from the overall volume make up richly layered building skins that blur the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces.
