We began with a large rectangular footprint topped with a shallow gabled roof, then cut away pieces in response to the site and program. The resulting C-shaped courtyard house for a couple and their children is nestled against the slope on the north side and embraces dramatic views of the valley below from the south.
Through ramps, stairs, interlocking volumes, and shifts in level, walking in and around the building mimics the experience of traversing the gently sloping site. A large cutout in the second floor allows the hillside to spill through the house, creating an exterior landscape passage from the upper site to the lower site.
