An early project of the Studio, this project was the renovation and decoration of a large basement space in the East Village. The owner asked us to create a bachelor pad den for media, dining and lounging. We started by stripping the space of all non-structural elements, exposing the rough schist retaining wall running the length of the space. To bring a "view" to this underground space, we created a mural of vertical birch tree trucks digitally printed on silk to cover the wall opposite the schist. A large glass ceiling at the end of the space was reclaimed, flooding the space with daylight and framing the sky above. The furniture consists of custom built ins proportioned for relaxation and entertainment. The palette of orange, gold, and dusty mauve contrasts and accentuates the hard architectural elements of rock, concrete, and plank flooring.
